What is Tamil Jothidam?

Tamil Jothidam (தமிழ் ஜோதிடம்) is the ancient Tamil system of astrology, rooted in the Vedic tradition and practiced for over two thousand years across Tamil Nadu and the Tamil diaspora. Unlike Western astrology which uses the tropical zodiac, Tamil astrology uses the sidereal zodiac - aligned to the actual positions of the stars in the sky.

Rasi & Nakshatram

Your Rasi (ராசி) is your Moon sign - the zodiac constellation the Moon occupied at your birth. In Tamil astrology, the Moon is considered more important than the Sun because it governs the mind, emotions, and inner self.

Your Nakshatram (நட்சத்திரம்) is your birth star - one of 27 lunar mansions that divide the sky. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the ecliptic and carries its own deity, ruling planet, and personality. Your Nakshatra and its Padam (quarter) are used for naming ceremonies, matching horoscopes for marriage, and determining auspicious timings.

Why do you need my birth time?

The Moon moves roughly half a degree every hour. Since each Nakshatra is only 13°20' wide, a difference of a few hours can place the Moon in a completely different birth star. An accurate birth time ensures the correct Rasi and Nakshatram are calculated. The timezone converts your local birth time to Universal Time for the astronomical calculation.

Marriage Matching (Porutham)

Person 1

Person 2

What is Porutham?

Porutham (பொருத்தம்) is the traditional Tamil method of evaluating marriage compatibility. Before a wedding is finalized, families consult an astrologer to check how well the couple's birth stars align. This practice has been central to Tamil marriages for centuries and is still widely followed today.

The 10 Compatibility Criteria

Porutham examines 10 distinct dimensions of compatibility between two people, each based on the position of the Moon at birth. These include Dina (daily harmony), Gana (temperament), Yoni (physical compatibility), Rasi (emotional match), Rajju (longevity), and five others. A score of 7 or more out of 10 is generally considered a good match.

The two most critical criteria are Rajju and Vedha - many families consider these non-negotiable. A failed Rajju is traditionally believed to threaten the spouse's wellbeing, while Vedha indicates a deep energetic obstruction between the couple's stars.

How does it work?

Enter the birth details of both individuals. The system calculates each person's Nakshatra (birth star) and Rasi (Moon sign) from their exact birth time and location, then evaluates all 10 Porutham criteria with detailed explanations for each result.

Today's Good & Bad Times

See today's auspicious and inauspicious windows based on your location. Timings are calculated from local sunrise and sunset.

What is Panchangam?

Panchangam (பஞ்சாங்கம்) literally means "five limbs" - it is the traditional Tamil-Hindu almanac that tracks five elements of each day: Tithi (lunar day), Vaaram (weekday), Nakshatra (star), Yogam (auspicious combination), and Karanam (half-tithi). These five elements together determine the auspicious and inauspicious nature of any given moment.

Auspicious Dates Explained

Rahu Kalam (ராகு காலம்) is a roughly 90-minute window each day ruled by the shadow planet Rahu, considered inauspicious for starting new ventures, signing contracts, or travelling. Yamagandam and Gulikai Kalam are similar inauspicious periods tied to Yama (lord of death) and Gulika (a sub-planet).

Abhijit Muhurtham (அபிஜித் முகூர்த்தம்) is the single most auspicious time of the day - a brief window around solar noon that is considered ideal for beginning anything important. It overrides even other negative influences.

Why does location matter?

These timings are calculated from sunrise and sunset at your specific location. Since sunrise varies by latitude and longitude, Rahu Kalam in Chennai will differ from Rahu Kalam in London. Selecting your exact city ensures the timings are accurate for where you are.

Find Auspicious Dates

Select a date range and event type to find auspicious muhurtham dates based on traditional Tamil panchangam criteria.

What is Muhurtham?

Muhurtham (முகூர்த்தம்) means "auspicious moment." In Tamil tradition, the timing of important life events is just as significant as the event itself. Choosing the right Muhurtham is believed to set a positive foundation - aligning the celestial energies in your favor for weddings, housewarming ceremonies, business launches, and travel.

How are dates scored?

Each date in your selected range is evaluated against multiple traditional criteria: the Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (star of the day), Yogam (planetary combination), Karanam (half-lunar day), and the weekday. Certain combinations are considered highly auspicious while others - like Rahu Kalam overlaps or inauspicious Tithis - reduce the score.

Dates are scored out of 100. Higher scores indicate stronger alignment with traditional panchangam criteria. The system also identifies auspicious time windows within each day, so you know not just which day, but which hours are best.

Event-specific matching

Different life events have different astrological requirements. A date that is excellent for a wedding may not be ideal for travel. For example, marriages traditionally favor specific Nakshatras like Rohini, Magha, and Uthiram, while business ventures look for different planetary alignments. Selecting your event type tailors the scoring to the right traditional criteria.
